A Little Bit of Home in a Foreign Land

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

This Army soldier in Iraq, with his tiny ‘plot’ of grass in front of his tent, is heart-warming! Here is a soldier stationed in Iraq, in the big sand box. He asked his wife to send him dirt (U.S.soil), fertilizer, and some grass seed so that he can have the sweet aroma, and feel the grass grow beneath his feet. When the men of the squadron have a mission that they are going on, they take turns walking through the grass and the American soil — to bring them good luck.

If you notice, he is even cutting the grass with a pair of a scissors. Sometimes we are in such a hurry that we don’t stop and think about the little things that we take for granted.

As you go to your picnics and parties this summer, slip your shoes off, walk in grass, and think about the soldiers that protect your liberty.   They are friends, family, brothers, sisters, moms and dads!

White Bread or Whole Wheat?

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

SO, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The two biggest differences between white bread and whole wheat are the processing and the nutritional value. Flour is made from wheat berries. The wheat berry is made up of the bran, the germ and the endosperm. All parts are filled with nutrients and are used in whole wheat flour.

White bread on the other hand, uses only the endosperm - the starchy inner layer. There is a total of 30 nutrients missing in white bread. The nutritional difference is immense and has measurable impact on our health.

THE IMPACT OF SWITCHING

The fiber content of whole wheat bread has several health benefits.

Fiber helps the digestive system. It also creates a ‘full’ sensation and thus can help with weight control. Research has been conducted by Harvard and other organizations that shows men and women who eat high-fiber foods have less heart attacks and strokes than those who don’t.

There is also an increased risk of diabetes in children who eat refined white flour - a risk that has been proven by the increase in cases of childhood diabetes.

READ THE LABEL!!

Watch out for words like ‘wheat flour’ or ‘enriched wheat flour’ as they can be mostly made from white flour with just a small amount of whole wheat added in.

Look for ‘whole wheat’ or other whole grains, like oat. And don’t be mislead by the name of the product. Names like wheat, whole bran, stoned wheat, 12 grain and others are still mostly white flour. The only way to know for sure is to read the label.

The distinction between a Freeman and a Slave

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

“No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion.”– James Burgh 1774

Snoring isn’t just Annoying!

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Living and trying to sleep with a snorer is an aggravation, but that’s only part of the negative consequences associated with the tendency. Snoring can be downright dangerous, too.

Take those who suffer from sleep apnea, for instance. This kind of intense snoring problem is associated with a litany of serious health concerns. People who have untreated sleep apnea are up to three times as likely to experience heart disease and are four times more likely to suffer from a stroke!

In addition, those who saw logs at high volume all night long aren’t really getting a good night’s sleep and are often depriving their body of a healthy oxygen flow.

To make matters worse, over fifty million people in the U.S. alone are serious snorers and some estimates suggest that up to forty percent of that group may be experiencing sleep apnea.

Being forced to sleep on the living room couch because your partner is making a great deal of noise is only one of many problems associated with snoring. When one considers the risks associated with the problem, it only makes sense to learn more about snoring and how to prevent it.

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things.”

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”– John Stewart Mills

Does sleep really affect your health?

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

You bet it does. During sleep, your body is resting and recovering from all the work is has done throughout the day. Your serotonin levels are brought back in line, your muscles relax, and mind is allowed to clear itself in preparation for the next day.

If you are not getting the proper amount of sleep, you will notice it in a physical way. While there is no magic number, usually between six and eight hours a night is appropriate.

If you have difficulty getting to sleep, before you climb into bed, try Yoga, listening to soft, relaxing music, or if you can talk someone into it, a good massage.  Click here to learn more ways to help you sleep.

Protect Your Domain Name Rights!!

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Whether you buy and sell domains for your business, maintain a portfolio of domain properties, or simply enjoy the use of domain names for personal websites or blogs, a threat has emerged to domain ownership and it is time for interested individuals and businesses to protect our rights. As you may have already read in the news or on a forum, a bill was recently introduced in the United States Senate by Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) that aims to drastically and needlessly expand the scope of rights associated with a trademark outside the realm of traditional trademark law. The Anti-Phishing Consumer Protection Act of 2008, or the Snowe bill as it is referred to, appears on its face to be directed to fighting the practice of “phishing”, which is a worthwhile cause, but contains many elements completely unrelated to this purpose, such as creating a cause of action for displaying advertising on a generic or descriptive domain name simply because another company has registered rights to a similar word or phrase.

If this bill is passed by Congress and signed by the President, it would immediately arm large businesses and government agencies with the ability to claim countless valuable and legitimate domains from their current owners. Supported by the Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse (CADNA), a coalition of companies that include Verizon, AIG, Dell, and several large hotel chains, the Snowe bill is attempting to confuse the issue of malicious phishing scams with the lawful and legitimate business of buying, selling and monetizing domain names.

By removing many of the intended checks and balances of traditional trademark law, designed to ensure that trademark rights are limited by geography and class of goods and services, the Snowe bill is attempting to eliminate many of the roadblocks large companies have faced in their attempt to gain de facto monopoly rights on words that rightfully belong to the public domain. Furthermore, the absence of due process principles make it likely that valuable domain properties could be taken from their rightful owner due only to a vague resemblance to another’s mark.

We encourage domain owners anywhere to help fight the Snowe bill by joining the Internet Commerce Association, a non-profit industry organization founded to help represent domain name investors and developers and the direct search industry. The Internet Commerce Association is comprised of responsible businesses and individuals who have joined together to improve public confidence in internet commerce. Based in Washington D.C., their mission is to promote and share best practices among participants in the domain name industry and to educate consumers, policy makers, law makers and the media about the value and benefits of direct navigation traffic and the domain name industry.

Please visit www.internetcommerce.org to learn more about the Snowe bill and how you can support the ICA in our effort to fight its passage.

This Can’t Happen in the United States…or is it too Late?

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

The following article appeared as an editorial in the “Letters to the Editor” in the Washington Times (Arlington, Virginia) on June 7, 199-.   The piece, verbatim, speaks for itself:

During the past several months in the American press, the Democrats have frequently denounced the Republicans as Nazis due to their attempts to control runaway federal spending.  How very ironic.  I remember the Nazis.  Let me share a little about them and recall some of their exploits.

First of all, “Nazi” was gutter slang for the verb “to nationalize.”  The Bider-Mienhoff gang gave themselves this moniker during their early struggles.  The official title of the Nazi Party was “The National Socialist Workers Party of Germany.”  Hitler and the Brownshirts advocated the nationalization of education, health care, transportation, national resources, manufacturing, distribution, and law enforcement.

Hitler came to power by turning the working class, unemployed, and academic elite against the conservative republic.  After Der Fuhrer’s election ceased being a political conspiracy and was transformed into a fashionable social phenomenon, party membership was especially popular with educators, bureaucrats, and the press.Being a Nazi was “politically correct.”  They called themselves “The Children of the New Age of World Order” and looked down their noses at everyone else.  As Hitler acquired more power, he referred to his critics as “The Dark Forces of Anarchy and Hatred.”  Anyone who questioned Nazi high-handedness in the German press was branded a “Conservative Reactionary.”

Joseph Goebbels, minister of communications, proclaimed a “New World Order.”The Nazi reign of terror began with false news reports on the Jews, Bohemians, and Gypsies who were said to be arming themselves to overthrow the “New World Order.”  Hitler demanded that all good people register their guns so that they wouldn’t fall into the hands of “terrorists and madmen.”  Right-wing fanatics of the “Old Order” who protested firearms registration were arrested by the S.S. and put in jail for “fomenting hatred against the Government of the German people.”

Then the Reichstag (government building) was blown up and Hitler ram-rodded an “Emergency Anti-Terrorist Act” through Parliament that gave the Gestapo extraordinary powers.  The leader then declared that for the well-being of the German people, all private firearms were to be confiscated by the Gestapo and the Wermotten (federal law enforcement and military).  German citizens who refused to surrender their guns when the “jack-boots” (Gestapo) came calling, were murdered in their homes.  By the way, the Gestapo were the federal marshals’ service of the Third Reich.  The S.W.A.T. team was invented and perfected by the Gestapo to break into the homes of the enemies of the German people. When the Policia Bewakken, or local police, refused to take away guns from townsfolk, they themselves were disarmed and dragged out into the street and shot to death by the S.A. and the S.S.  Those were Nazi versions of the B.A.T.F.and the F.B.I.  When several local ministers spoke out against these atrocities, they were imprisoned and never seen again.  The Gestapo began to confiscate and seize the homes, businesses, bank accounts, and personal belongings of wealthy conservative citizens who had prospered in the old Republic.  Pamphleteers who urged revolt against the Nazis were shot on site by national law enforcement and the military.  Gypsies and Jews were detained and sent to labor camps.  Mountain roads throughout central Europe were closed to prevent the escape of fugitives into the wilderness, and to prevent the movement and concealment of partisan resistance fighters.

Public schools rewrote history and Hitler youth groups taught the children to report their parents to their teachers for anti-Nazi remarks.  Such parents disappeared.  Pagan animism became the state religion of the Third Reich and Christians were widely condemned as “right wing fanatics.”Millions of books were burned first and then people.  Millions of them burned in huge ovens after they were first gassed to death.  Unmarried women were paid large sums of money to have babies out of wedlock and then given medals for it.  Evil was declared as being good, and good was condemned as being evil.  World Order was coming and the German people were going to be the “peacekeepers.”

Yes, indeed, I remember the Nazis and they weren’t Republicans, or “right wing,” or “patriots,” or “militias.”  They were Socialist monsters.— Thomas Colton Ruthford

Tired of Not Being Heard?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

There comes a time in life when you need to be taken seriously and command attention.Try the following three-step power speaking technique the next time you need to get across something important. By using this power speaking technique, you can learn to control your tone of voice so only the emotions you want come through.

This technique will help you speak out and be heard, and express yourself with power and authority. This will help even if you feel a little shy or intimidated.

Actors, orators, executives, and politicians have been using these techniques for centuries.  Now you can learn the power of these techniques too.

Here’s the basic idea to get you started:

You can’t communicate effectively without emotion. To express yourself fully and powerfully, you need to access the proper emotional state. You do this by giving yourself cues, which are auditory (heard), kinesthetic (felt), and visual (seen).

1. A Key word- auditory cue

2. A Mental image- visual cue

3. Body language- kinesthetic cue

Select your auditory cue. Using a single word, name the over-riding “feeling” you’d like to convey in your presentation. For an authoritative tone of voice choose a short, dynamic, active word such as: “power,” “strong,” “win,” “go,” or “kill”.  Now say this word aloud over and over with psychotic like enthusiasm!

Select your visual cue.  As you say your authoritative key word out loud, a movie will begin to ‘play’ in your mind.  Keep saying your key word over and over, making the image nice and clear and bright. For an authoritative tone of voice, picture yourself as an executive, a coach, a military officer, or some other authoratative figure.  Find the image that works for you.  Be sure to notice all the cinematic details, the colors, the set design, the supporting cast.  Strength comes from the details.

Select your kinesthetic cue.  The easiest and fastest way to change the sound of your voice is to change your physiology.  You need to make your body language BIG.  To sound more authoritative, stand up straight! Erect posture.  Strong hand gestures.  Firm gaze, even when you are on the phone.  In fact, when speaking on the phone, don’t let your eyes wander.  If you are alone in the room, fix your gaze on the eyes of a person in a photograph or magazine.  This technique may sound strange at first, but try it. It really works!

Use these “power speaking” techniques and you will be absolutely amazed at the rapid changes your new confidence levels will have on your life.

Does Evil Exist?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

The university professor challenged his students with this question. Did God create everything that exists?

A student bravely replied “yes, He did!”

“God created everything?” The professor asked.

“Yes sir”, the student replied.

The professor answered, “If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are then God is evil”.

The student became quiet before such an answer.

The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, “Can I ask you a question professor?”

“Of course”, replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, “Professor, does cold exist?”

“What kind of question is this?  Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?”, answered the professor.

The students snickered at the young man’s question.

The young man replied, “In fact sir, cold does not exist.  According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat.

The student continued. “Professor, does darkness exist?”

The professor responded, “Of course it does”.

The student replied, “Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light.  Light we can study, but not darkness.  In fact we can use Newton’s prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is?  You measure the amount of light present. Isn’t this correct?  Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present.”

Finally the young man asked the professor. “Sir, does evil exist?”

Now uncertain, the professor responded, “Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. “These manifestations are nothing else but evil.”

To this the student replied, “Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love that exist just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.”

The professor sat down.

Did you ever notice…

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Did you ever notice, when there is a firearm related problem or tragedy, the only  solution some people can think of is more gun control.  Maybe, this is part of the problem:

”…the rank and file are usually much more primitive than we imagine. Propaganda must therefore always be essentially simple and repetitious.  The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly…it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.”

 – Joseph Goebbels - Nazi Propaganda Minister

Of course,  we don’t get propaganda in the United States, we get the news…

The Canning Jar

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the canning  jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.  When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty canning  jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.  He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a bag of  marbles and poured them into the jar.  He shook the jar lightly.  The marbles  rolled into the open areas between the  golf balls. He then asked the students  again if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor next picked up a box of  sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.  He asked once more if the jar was  full. The students responded with a unanimous  “yes!”

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the  table and poured the entire contents into the jar  effectively filling the empty space  between the sand.

The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor  as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize  that this jar represents your  life. The golf balls are the important  things–your family, your children, your  health, your friends and your favorite  passions–and if everything else was lost  and only they remained, your life would still be full. The marbles are the  other things that matter,  like your job, your house and your car.  The sand is everything  else–the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar  first,” he continued, “there is no room  for the marbles or the golf balls. The  same goes for life. If you spend all  your time and energy on the small stuff you  will never have room for the things  that are important to you.

“Pay  attention to the things that are critical to your happiness!  Play with  your  children.  Take time to get medical checkups.  Take your spouse out to  dinner.  Play another 18.  There will always be time to clean the house and fix  the  disposal.  Take care of the golf balls first–the things that really matter.  Set  your priorities.  The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her  hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled. “I’m  glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no  matter how full your life may  seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups  of coffee with a  friend.”

More Proof THEY are Out to Get YOU…

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

“Our main agenda is to have all guns banned. We must use whatever means possible. It doesn’t matter if you have to distort the facts or even lie. Our task of creating a Socialist America can only succeed when those who would resist us have been totally disarmed.”

–Sarah Brady (In a letter to Senator Howard Metzenbaum, The National Educator, January 1994, page 3)

From Procrastination to Action

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

“I think there is something, more important than believing: Action!
The world is full of dreamers, there aren’t enough who will move ahead
and begin to take concrete steps to actualize their vision.”
- W. Clement Stone

Procrastination sets in and for many it becomes a habit that pulls them even further down – it keeps you locked up in a world that is just soooo much smaller than the one that’s waiting for you out there. You can ‘see’ it and some part of you know that you can get there, BUT still you remain bound and the invisible force of procrastination keeps you from progressing and getting out there.. Just ask me…I’ve been there and done that and I know how incredibly frustrating this is.
